Jewellery
Care
1. Never use toothpaste to clean your jewellery. This is only
a myth that will actually reduce the shine of your jewellery, due to the thick
toothpaste leaving residue behind the gemstones.
2. The best way to clean your jewellery at home is to use warm,
soapy water (such as liquid dish soap) and a soft bristle toothbrush. Do not brush
too hard, especially where there are claws holding your gemstones, because you
can get bristles stuck in your jewellery, or possibly loosen a gemstone. Furthermore,
do not use water or any liquid with any pearl jewellery or gems that have not
been set, but are glued (such as, marcasites, rhinestones, etc). If you are not
sure if your stones are glued, either Contact
Us or drop by our store and we will be gladly advise you further.
3. After cleaning your jewellery with the warm, soapy water
it is best to let the jewellery air dry or use a lint-free cloth to dry it, such
as a lens cleaning cloth, perhaps for your eyeglasses. Using a hand towel will
leave many dust particles on your jewellery.
4. For pearl jewellery, there are some special needs. You should
never take showers with your pearls or put on hairspray and fragrances near your
pearls. A quick way to give those pearls a cleaning is to first dampen a soft
cloth with olive oil, then rub each pearl with the oiled cloth.
5. Do not wear your jewellery while using products that contain
chemicals, like mercury. Certain chemicals can cause the alloy portion in your
gold or silver to tarnish.
6. Be careful when you wear your rings while swimming in cold
water. Your fingers slightly shrink and can cause a ring you are wearing to slip
right off unnoticeably. For any other questions regarding jewellery care, please
do not hesitate to contact the experts at Mona-Clara Jewellers. We will be more
than happy to assist you in answering any questions.
